Worldly Women at the Court of Charles II: Exile, Excess, and the Expanding World

  • River Room Strand London, WC2R 2LS (map)

Join Dr Kerry Apps and Dr Annalisa Nicholson, in conversation with Dr Hannah Dawson and Catharine MacLeod, for a lively discussion on women at the court of Charles II. Since the Restoration was marked by a looser policing of elite women, the panel will consider how women courtiers embraced new trends and opportunities from travel and consumerism to libertinism. They will focus on figures at the centre of recent research including Hortense Mancini, Maria of Modena, and Elizabeth Maitland. Exploring the treatment of these women – in portraiture, in satire, and in contemporary correspondence – the panellists will reflect on how feminist archival methodologies are fuelling new perspectives on early modern women.

After the panel discussion, there will be an informal Q&A with the audience, followed by drinks and nibbles.
