CfP: Rethinking State and Society in Early Modern Britain

The Centre for Early Modern Studies at KCL invites submissions for papers to be presented at a conference on 17th December 2024. The theme is ‘Rethinking State and Society in Early Modern Britain’. Topics may include, but are not limited to:

  • The nature of the early modern state

  • State formation and social change

  • State power in everyday life

  • Participation in and exclusion from state power

  • Gender and the state

  • Race and the state

  • The state in Wales, Scotland, and Ireland

  • The state and the Atlantic world

  • (Dis)connections between state authority and social authority

  • Historiography of the state and society in the early modern period

  • Sources for studying the state and society

Proposals for individual papers (20 mins) or 3-paper panels should be sent to Dr Jonah Miller (jonah.4.miller@kcl.ac.uk). The deadline for proposals is Friday 1st November.
