Preparing Your First Academic Article: A Summer Workshop

  • Strand S8.08 King's College London WC2R 2LS (map)

CEMS warmly invites expressions of interest in a workshop aimed at helping late-stage PGRs and ECRs to develop articles for publication. This in-person session will provide participants with detailed feedback on their writing, specific guidance on navigating the relevant peer-review process, as well as the opportunity to discuss their work and ideas in a collegiate environment.

The workshop will take place on Thursday 23 June 2022 between 9am and 5.30pm on the top floor of the Strand Building (S8.08) at King’s. All participants will be required to submit a completed article draft in advance of the session by Wednesday 1 June 2022 (max. 10,000 words). Each paper will receive around 30-35 minutes of discussion, led by different early modernists from across A&H. In addition to this, each participant will receive written feedback on their work from a scholar working within a related field.

The workshop will be held in-person and attendance is a prerequisite for participation in the process. Participants will be expected to have read all other papers in advance of our meeting. Please do bear this in mind when considering your application.

The deadline for expressions of interest is Monday 28 March 2022, at 5pm. Please email cems@kcl.ac.uk with the following information in order to apply:

  • Name

  • Stage of research (please include expected or actual date of thesis submission)

  • Department / Institution

  • A paragraph outline of your PhD project (max. 300 words)

  • A provisional article title (we will not hold you to this, but this will help us to match your work to a suitable scholar)

  • Proposed place of publication (max. 2)

We welcome applications from PGRs and ECRs outside of King’s, but numbers are restricted for obvious reasons to a maximum of 8 participants. As such, we will prioritise KCL students in all instances, and then final-year PhD candidates and ECRs within twelve-months of thesis submission thereafter.

This workshop marks the second in our series aimed at helping PGRs and ECRs to develop pathways towards publication. However, you do not need to have attended December’s introductory session to apply this time around.

Please do send any questions to cems@kcl.ac.uk. We look forward to hearing from you.
